Multisensory Integration and Neurocognitive Dynamics Lab
The Multisensory Integration and Neurocognitive Dynamics Lab investigates how auditory,
visual, and tactile systems develop, process, and integrate sensory information across
the lifespan to support speech perception, communication, cognitive function, and
auditory rehabilitation.
Research
- Neuroplasticity and neurocognitive function of the central auditory system
- Cochlear implants and auditory rehabilitation
- Multisensory integration in speech perception and communication
- Auditory processing and auditory processing disorders
- Sensory development and early intervention

Assistant Professor
Director, Multisensory Integration and Neurocognitive Dynamics Lab
Dr. Yi Yuan studies the neural and cognitive mechanisms that support speech perception,
auditory processing, and communication in complex listening environments. Her research
examines how auditory and multisensory systems develop and change across the lifespan,
how the brain represents the temporal and structural features of speech, and how cognitive
functions such as attention and listening effort contribute to auditory perception.
She is particularly interested in how auditory, visual, and tactile information are
integrated to support speech understanding and how these sensory and cognitive processes
contribute to individual differences in communication outcomes.
Her work includes cochlear implant users, listeners with hearing loss, and individuals
with auditory or neurodevelopmental conditions. She uses behavioral measures, auditory
electrophysiology, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and other neurotechnologies
to study neural encoding, multisensory integration, auditory plasticity, and speech
perception in noise.
Dr. Yuan’s research seeks to improve auditory rehabilitation and develop individualized
approaches to communication support, including multisensory and technology-assisted
interventions.
